When you live with and love rats there are a few things you have to come to terms with rather quickly. One of them is the fact that everything will be chewed! The other really big one is that they only live 2 or 3 years. It always hurts, but you can always keep your loving memories around.
The first rat I ever lived with was named Phluphy. He was a hairless and just about the sweetest thing ever. We used to nap together between classes. Sadly I never took any photos of him so I cannot share his cuteness.
I few years later I went to the pet shop and fell in love with Spike.
He was such a sweetie. He came home with me the summer of 2002 as an adult 5 months old. He died xmas 2004. It hurt, but he lived a long time.
Summer of 2004 I brought home a pair of babies. Jean-luc and Logan. Logan was always smaller than his brother. I took them to the vet and there was nothing wrong except lice. So I hesitantly went along with the ivermectin injections. Just don't do that. Neither baby grew to thier full potential and Logan died the same day Spike did. He was 6 monts old and barely larger than when he came home.
After the double loss of Spike and Logan I decided to do something nice for the rat community so I contacted the Seattle Humane society and adopted Malcolm.
Malcolm is the black and white in the center of the photo. I could tell when he came home that he was an old man. Elderly rats have a distinctive walk. We had malcolm for about 5 months, but I'm sure they were the best months of his life. Good food, good friends.
Jean-Luc
Jean-Luc passed away Last Saturday Evening (July 23, 2005) He is missed very much
Fuzzy was the sweetest Black Bear Hampster ever! She lived with me for 2.5 years and even flew 1/2 way across the country to live in seattle.
